Which AI Search Engines Actually Send Business Traffic?

By Robin Ooi4 min read

The short answer

Google AI Overviews reaches the most people but sends the fewest clicks. Perplexity sends the most clicks relative to its size because citations are front and centre. ChatGPT sits in between with the largest audience of any assistant. For most Malaysian businesses, the first two are where the effort belongs.

The question worth asking first

Every AI platform now has an answer feature, and every one of them is being pitched as essential. They are not equally worth your time. Two variables decide it: how many of your buyers are actually there, and whether the interface encourages anyone to click through to a source.

Those two things pull in opposite directions. The platform with the widest reach has the lowest click-through, because it is designed to end the search. The platform with the best click-through has a fraction of the audience. Knowing which trade you are making is the whole exercise.

The six, ranked by what they are worth to a business

1. Google AI Overviews

The widest reach by a distance, because it appears on ordinary Google searches without anyone opting in. Your customers are already using it whether they know it or not. The catch is that it is built to answer the question in place, so click-through is the weakest of the six.

Worth optimising for anyway, because it is the one that can quietly remove traffic you currently have. Source selection favours pages already ranking in the top ten, which makes it the most tractable of the six. The practical steps are in how to appear in Google AI Overviews.

2. ChatGPT

The largest audience of any standalone assistant, and increasingly where people go for research and shortlisting rather than quick facts. It shows linked citations on searches that need current information, and users do click them, particularly on comparison and buying questions.

Getting cited here depends heavily on third-party corroboration rather than on-site polish. It weights community discussion, review sites and editorial mentions more than Google does. That makes it slower to influence and more durable once you are in.

3. Perplexity

Smallest audience of the top three, best click-through by design. Citations sit inline and numbered, the interface actively invites verification, and users tend to be researchers, analysts and buyers doing due diligence. Traffic quality is consistently the highest.

It also has the shortest feedback loop. Publish something genuinely useful and well structured and it can appear in Perplexity answers within days rather than months. If you want to test whether your content restructuring works, test it here first.

4. Google Gemini

Large installed base through Android and Workspace, but conversational answers frequently carry no visible source links at all. Influence without attribution. Overlaps enough with AI Overviews that separate optimisation is rarely justified for a smaller business.

5. Microsoft Copilot

Deeply embedded in Windows and Microsoft 365, which matters more in enterprise environments than consumer ones. Cites sources reasonably visibly. If your buyers are corporate IT or procurement, this is more relevant than its general market share suggests. For most Malaysian SMEs it is not a priority.

6. Claude

Strong adoption among developers, analysts and technical professionals, and it does cite sources when searching. Small audience for consumer-facing businesses. Worth caring about if you sell to technical buyers, safe to deprioritise otherwise.

The useful pattern in that table is that the work overlaps. Everything that makes you eligible for AI Overviews also helps in Perplexity. Everything that earns ChatGPT citations also improves conventional rankings. You are not running six campaigns. You are running one, with six places to check the result.

Where to start if you have limited time

  1. Confirm you are not blocked. Check robots.txt and your CDN for GPTBot, OAI-SearchBot, PerplexityBot, ClaudeBot and Google-Extended. Some security products block these by default. This takes fifteen minutes and it is the only step that can single-handedly explain total absence.
  2. Fix the pages that already rank. Move the answer to the top of any page sitting in positions four to fifteen. This is the fastest available win and it feeds AI Overviews directly.
  3. Test in Perplexity. Shortest feedback loop of the six. If your restructured pages start appearing there, the structural work is landing.
  4. Build off-site evidence for ChatGPT. Editorial mentions, inclusion in category roundups, expert commentary. Slowest, most durable, and the thing most businesses never start, which is why it sits at the centre of my AI SEO engagements.
  5. Re-check monthly against a fixed question set. Same questions, same day. Method in how to track AI search visibility.

Frequently asked questions

Which AI search engine sends the most referral traffic?

Perplexity sends the most clicks relative to its audience size, because citations are displayed inline and the interface encourages verification. In absolute volume ChatGPT sends more, simply because far more people use it. Google AI Overviews reaches the most people but converts the fewest to clicks.

Should I optimise for every AI platform separately?

No. The underlying work overlaps heavily. Clear structure, direct answers, correct markup and third-party corroboration improve your position across all of them. Run one strategy and check the result in several places rather than running parallel campaigns per platform.

Is AI referral traffic worth anything if the volume is small?

Usually yes, on a per-visitor basis. Someone arriving from a cited answer has typically read a summary that already positioned you as credible, so they arrive further along the decision. Judge it on lead quality and conversion rate rather than session count.

How do I see AI referral traffic in Google Analytics?

Look at referral sources for chatgpt.com, perplexity.ai, copilot.microsoft.com and gemini.google.com. Google AI Overviews traffic is not separated out and appears within normal organic search, which is why manual query checks matter alongside analytics.

Which platform should a Malaysian SME prioritise?

Google AI Overviews first, because it sits on searches your customers already run and can quietly remove traffic you currently have. Then Perplexity for the fast feedback loop, then ChatGPT for durable long-term citation. Gemini, Copilot and Claude rarely justify separate work at SME scale.
