Removal vs Suppression: Your Options for Negative Google Results in Malaysia

By Robin Ooi5 min read

The short answer

Removal takes a result down, or out of Google, when it breaks a policy or the law. Suppression leaves the page online and ranks accurate pages above it. We try removal first. If the page is allowed to stay, suppression is the durable route. The timeframes here are typical, not guarantees.

Two paths for a negative Google result, one removed and one pushed below accurate pages

Removal and suppression are two different jobs

People often ask us to delete a result. Sometimes that is the right job. Often it is not. Removal takes the content down, or takes the result out of Google. Suppression leaves it online and moves it off the first page by ranking better, accurate pages above it.

We try removal first, because a successful removal is permanent. Suppression is what we use when removal is not possible. Mixing the two up is how people spend months on a report Google was never going to accept. A Reddit thread is the common case, covered in how to remove or push down a negative Reddit thread.

What Google's own removal policies cover

Google removes search results that fit a published policy. Being unflattering is not a policy. These are the routes we check before any suppression work starts.

  • Personal information. Contact details, ID numbers, financial or medical details, and doxxing. The result leaves Google. The page can remain on the website. See Remove my private info from Google Search.
  • Outdated content. After the source page is deleted or edited, Google can still show the old snippet. The Refresh Outdated Content tool asks for a recrawl. Usually days to a few weeks for a decision.
  • Legal removal. Defamation, privacy, and copyright go through Google's legal removal requests. A legal request is not a ranking tactic.

What these policies will not do is erase honest criticism, a genuine bad review, or accurate news reporting. Anyone who promises that is overselling.

MCMC complaints and defamation, as general information

Some harmful content can be reported to the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC). Defamation claims in Malaysia fall under the Defamation Act 1957. This paragraph is general information, not legal advice. We are not lawyers, and nothing here is a prediction of a legal outcome.

When a case needs legal action, we work alongside your lawyer. Our part is the evidence pack: the URLs, the screenshots, and the dates, plus what Google and the AI assistants currently show. The lawyer decides whether a claim is worth bringing. If the content is lawful, the search problem remains, and suppression is the remaining option.

How suppression actually works

Suppression does not hide a page. It gives Google, and the person searching, something more accurate and more useful to rank above it. Most people never scroll past page one. AI assistants tend to summarise the sources that rank and are cited most, which is why the same work changes what ChatGPT and Google AI Overviews repeat. How to appear in Google AI Overviews explains that retrieval step.

  1. Search the name the way a client, investor, or journalist would, in Google and in AI assistants, in English, Malay, and Chinese. Record page one and page two.
  2. Work out which queries trigger the negative result, and which strong page about you is missing.
  3. Publish assets that deserve to outrank it: official profiles, a structured site, expert articles, interviews, directories, and video. Owned or controlled by you, and true.
  4. Strengthen them with internal links, structured data, consistent business details, and genuine third party mentions.
  5. Monitor positions and AI answers, and respond if something new appears.

We do not use fake reviews, fake accounts, or spam links. Those breach platform rules and can backfire. Autocomplete is a neighbouring problem with the same discipline: negative Google autocomplete suggestions.

Branded search control

A branded result is what appears when someone searches the person or the company by name. Page one of that search, across the All, News, and Video tabs, is the page a buyer, a journalist, or a due diligence team actually reads. Control means those slots are filled with accurate pages, not with whatever ranked by accident.

That includes the queries around the name: reviews, comparisons, and legitimacy searches. Leaving those empty is how a single negative page keeps its place. The commercial programme for this is online reputation management, led by Robin Ooi, founder of Catapultz Group Sdn Bhd.

What happens to AI answers

ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, and Google AI Overviews draw on the pages that rank and get cited. They do not keep a separate file of your reputation. When the strongest sources change, the answers usually follow, often with a lag of weeks or months after the Google results move.

There is no stable rank inside an AI answer, so we do not invent one. The practical check is to ask the same questions a stranger would ask, and to record what is cited. A method for that sits in how to track AI search visibility without fake metrics.

Typical timeframes, not guarantees

Every case depends on how strong the negative page is, how many searches it appears for, and how much legitimate content already exists. These ranges are typical. They are not a promise.

SituationTypical timeframe
Platform report or Google personal information requestA few days to a few weeks for a decision

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between removal and suppression?

Removal takes the content down or out of Google. Suppression leaves it online but moves it off the first page by ranking better, accurate pages above it. We try removal first and use suppression when removal is not possible. A successful removal is permanent. Suppression has to be maintained.

Which negative Google results can actually be removed?

Results that expose personal contact details, ID numbers, financial or medical details, or that are doxxing. Also results that are outdated after the source was deleted or edited, and results that qualify for a legal removal. Honest criticism, a genuine review, and accurate news usually stay. Removal takes the result out of Google, not always off the website.

Is an MCMC complaint or a defamation claim the same as SEO?

No. Some harmful content can be reported to MCMC, and defamation claims in Malaysia fall under the Defamation Act 1957. That is general information, not legal advice. We are not lawyers. When a case needs legal action we work with your lawyer. If the content is lawful, suppression is the remaining search option.

How long does suppression of a negative Google result take?

Typically 3 to 6 months for a single result on a personal name, and 6 to 12 months or longer for a strong page or several negative results. A policy decision is often days to a few weeks. These are typical ranges, not guarantees. The case depends on how strong the negative page is.

Will AI answers drop the negative result when Google does?

Usually after the Google results change, and often with a lag of weeks or months. AI answers cite the pages that rank. Until accurate pages are the strongest source, ChatGPT, Gemini, and Google AI Overviews can keep repeating the old one. We track that. We do not invent a rank inside the answer.
